Who Is Draupadi?

1 min read

Draupadi is one of the most important figures in the Mahabharata, the great Indian epic composed between roughly 400 BCE and 400 CE. Born from a sacred fire ritual, she became the wife of all five Pandava brothers and was a queen whose humiliation in the court of Hastinapura became the catalyst for the Kurukshetra War, one of the most destructive conflicts in Indian mythology. She is revered as a symbol of courage, justice, and the refusal to accept dishonor.

What Is Draupadi Known For?

Draupadi is best known for the incident of vastraharan — the attempted public disrobing in the Kaurava court. After her husband Yudhishthira lost her in a game of dice to the Kauravas, Dushasana dragged her before the assembly by her hair and attempted to strip her of her clothing. Draupadi called out to Krishna for protection, and according to tradition, her sari became endless, making it impossible to disrobe her. She then confronted the assembled court, demanding to know whether a man who had already lost himself in gambling had the right to stake his wife — a legal and moral challenge that none of the elders could answer.

Why Is Draupadi Married to Five Brothers?

According to the Mahabharata, when Arjuna won Draupadi's hand in a competition, he returned home and told his mother Kunti that he had brought something back. Without looking, Kunti said he should share it equally among his brothers. Since a mother's word could not be taken back, Draupadi became the wife of all five Pandavas. This unusual arrangement has generated extensive commentary across centuries of Hindu scholarship, with interpretations ranging from the literal to the allegorical.

What Role Does Draupadi Play in the Mahabharata?

Draupadi serves as both a moral compass and a catalyst for justice throughout the epic. Her refusal to forgive the humiliation she suffered in the Kaurava court is one of the driving forces behind the Pandavas' determination to fight. She repeatedly challenges her husbands when she feels they are being passive or compromising on justice. She is one of the few characters in the Mahabharata who consistently demands accountability from those in power.
