Who Is Gandalf? His True Identity as a Maiar Spirit

What is a Maiar?
In Tolkien's mythology, the Maiar are divine spirits created by Ilúvatar (God) before the world existed. They are servants and emissaries of the Valar (angelic powers who shaped the physical world). The Maiar include Sauron, the Balrogs, and Gandalf — placing them on the same ontological level. Gandalf and Sauron are beings of the same order.
What was Gandalf's name before he came to Middle-earth?
In Valinor (the divine realm), Gandalf was known as Olórin. He was said to be among the wisest of the Maiar, and his primary gift was compassion — he could inspire hope in the despairing and reveal the courage people didn't know they had. He was not a warrior but a counselor.
Why did Gandalf come to Middle-earth?
The Valar sent five Maiar to Middle-earth as the Istari (wizards) to help the free peoples resist Sauron — who was himself a fallen Maiar. The key restriction: they were sent in the forms of old men, limited in their power, specifically to inspire and guide rather than to dominate. This is why Gandalf consistently refuses to take the Ring — using it would violate his mission's terms.
What is Gandalf's relationship to Sauron?
They are the same kind of being. Sauron was also Maiar, but he fell from service to Morgoth (the original dark lord). Gandalf's mission was, in part, specifically to counter Sauron's influence — but through inspiring free peoples' own resistance, not by replacing Sauron's domination with his own.
Why doesn't Gandalf just use all his power?
