Who Is Gollum?

1 min read

Gollum, originally Smeagol, is a character in J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. He is a hobbit-like creature who possessed the One Ring for nearly five hundred years. The Ring extended his life but consumed his identity, splitting him into two personalities: the pitiful Smeagol and the dangerous Gollum.

What Happens to Gollum?

Smeagol murdered his cousin Deagol to obtain the Ring. He hid in the Misty Mountains for centuries until Bilbo Baggins found the Ring. Gollum tracked the Ring to Frodo and alternated between helping and betraying him. He ultimately fell into Mount Doom with the Ring, destroying it and himself.

Why Is Gollum Important?

Gollum is essential to the Ring's destruction. Tolkien wrote that the Ring could not be destroyed by an act of will — Frodo ultimately claims it. Gollum's obsessive pursuit is what accidentally saves Middle-earth. His tragedy is that his corruption serves a purpose he never intended.

What Does Gollum Represent?

Gollum represents addiction and the destruction of identity by desire. He is what any Ring-bearer could become. Frodo's pity for Gollum is not just compassion — it is recognition.
