Who Is Himura Kenshin From Rurouni Kenshin?
Himura Kenshin is the protagonist of Rurouni Kenshin, a manga by Nobuhiro Watsuki serialized from 1994 to 1999 in Weekly Shonen Jump. Set in the early Meiji era of Japan (1878), Kenshin is a former assassin known as Hitokiri Battosai (Battosai the Manslayer) who now wanders Japan with a reversed-edge sword (sakabato), protecting people while atoning for the lives he took during the Bakumatsu revolution. The manga has sold over 72 million copies.
What Is a Sakabato (Reverse-Blade Sword)?
A sakabato is a katana with its sharp edge on the inner curve rather than the outer, making it extremely difficult to kill with during normal sword strikes. Kenshin carries this sword as a physical manifestation of his vow never to kill again. While a sakabato can still cause serious injury, its design forces the wielder to use non-lethal techniques. Kenshin's sakabato was forged by the swordsmith Arai Shakku, who made weapons during the revolution and later crafted the reversed blade as his own act of atonement.
What Is the Bakumatsu?
The Bakumatsu (1853-1868) was the period at the end of the Tokugawa shogunate in Japan, marked by civil conflict between forces supporting the shogun and those seeking to restore imperial rule. Kenshin fought on the imperialist side as an assassin, killing key figures in the shogunate. After the Meiji Restoration succeeded, Kenshin was haunted by the violence he committed and chose a life of wandering pacifism. The series uses real historical events and figures (fictionalized) to create its setting.
What Is Kenshin's Cross-Shaped Scar?
Kenshin's distinctive cross-shaped cheek scar was made by two people: the first slash by a bodyguard (Kiyosato Akira) whom Kenshin killed during the revolution, and the second by that bodyguard's fiancee (Yukishiro Tomoe), who became Kenshin's wife and died partly due to his actions. The scar never fully heals because it carries the emotional weight of both his victims. It serves as a permanent reminder of the human cost of his past violence.
How Strong Is Kenshin?
Kenshin practices the Hiten Mitsurugi-ryu sword style, characterized by god-like speed. His signature techniques include Battojutsu (quick-draw attacks) and the Amakakeru Ryu no Hirameki, the school's ultimate succession technique. Despite using a reversed blade, Kenshin is depicted as virtually unbeatable in combat. His speed allows him to strike opponents before they can react, and he can incapacitate even the strongest fighters without killing them.
