Who Is Korra?
Korra is the protagonist of The Legend of Korra, the sequel series to Avatar: The Last Airbender, which aired from 2012 to 2014. She is the Avatar born in the Southern Water Tribe, a powerful and hot-headed young woman who is the opposite of Aang in almost every way — she masters physical bending easily but struggles with the spiritual and emotional aspects of being the Avatar.
What Is Korra's Story?
Korra moves to Republic City to learn airbending and immediately finds herself facing threats that challenge her on every level — Amon strips her of her bending, Unalaq nearly destroys the Avatar cycle, Zaheer poisons her and leaves her with severe PTSD, and Kuvira threatens to conquer everything she has fought to protect.
Why Is Korra Important?
Korra was one of the first protagonists in children's animation to deal openly with PTSD, depression, and recovery. Her third-season poisoning and its aftermath in season four is a brutally honest depiction of trauma. Her confirmed bisexuality in the series finale was also groundbreaking for animated television.
What Makes Korra Different from Aang?
Where Aang had to learn to fight, Korra had to learn to stop fighting. Her greatest growth comes not from gaining new powers but from accepting vulnerability, asking for help, and understanding that suffering can create empathy.
