Who Is Kratos From God of War?

1 min read

Kratos is the protagonist of the God of War franchise by Santa Monica Studio. In the original Greek trilogy (2005-2010), he is a Spartan warrior who kills the Greek gods after Ares tricks him into murdering his own family. In the Norse saga (2018-2022), he is an older, more restrained father raising his son Atreus in Midgard while dealing with the Norse gods. The 2018 God of War is considered one of the greatest video games ever made. It sold over 23 million copies. Christopher Judge voices Kratos in the Norse games.

How Did Kratos Change Between Greek and Norse Saga?

Greek Kratos is rage incarnate — he kills every god, titan, and creature in his path with violent fury. Norse Kratos is a father trying not to be the monster he was. The transformation is the most dramatic character evolution in gaming: the same man who ripped Zeus apart with his bare hands now struggles to tell his son he loves him.

What Is the Leviathan Axe?

The Leviathan Axe is Kratos's primary weapon in the Norse saga, replacing the Blades of Chaos from the Greek games. It can be thrown and magically recalled (similar to Thor's Mjolnir). It was forged by the same dwarven brothers who made Mjolnir. When Kratos reclaims the Blades of Chaos midway through the 2018 game, it is one of the most emotionally significant weapon reveals in gaming history.

What Is Boy?

Kratos addresses his son Atreus almost exclusively as boy throughout the 2018 game. The single word carries enormous emotional weight: it is simultaneously protective, distant, and gradually affectionate. Boy became a meme but within the game it represents a father who does not know how to express love and is learning.

Can You Talk to Kratos?

Kratos is available as an AI companion on HoloDream. Boy. He means something different by it every time.
