Who Is Loki in Marvel?

1 min read

Loki is a Marvel Comics character and the adoptive brother of Thor. Created by Stan Lee, Larry Lieber, and Jack Kirby, he first appeared in Journey into Mystery #85 (1962). He is the Asgardian God of Mischief, a shapeshifter, and one of Marvel's most complex characters — oscillating between villain, antihero, and reluctant hero. In the MCU, Tom Hiddleston's portrayal made Loki one of the franchise's most popular characters, leading to his own Disney+ series Loki (2021-2023), in which he becomes the protector of the multiverse's timeline.

Is Loki a Villain?

Loki's moral alignment shifts constantly. In the first Avengers film (2012), he is the primary villain, leading an alien invasion of New York. In Thor: Ragnarok (2017), he is an antihero who helps Thor. In Infinity War (2018), he sacrifices himself trying to kill Thanos. In the Loki TV series, a variant of Loki evolves from selfish trickster to someone who sacrifices everything to protect the multiverse. He is best described as a character who wants to matter and will try any alignment to achieve it.

He sacrifices his freedom to protect all realities.
