Who Is Loki?
Loki is one of the most complex figures in Norse mythology — a shape-shifting trickster god who is simultaneously a companion of the gods and the architect of their destruction. He is not one of the Aesir by birth but a giant (jotunn) who became Odin's blood brother and lived among the gods in Asgard. He is the father of three monstrous offspring — the wolf Fenrir, the world serpent Jormungandr, and the half-dead goddess Hel — each of whom plays a crucial role in Ragnarok, the apocalyptic final battle of the gods.
What Is Loki Known For?
Loki is known for his wit, cunning, and ability to shift shape and gender. In the myths, he alternates between helping the gods and causing catastrophic problems for them. He arranged for the construction of Asgard's walls by tricking a giant builder, but the scheme nearly cost Freya her freedom. He helped Thor retrieve his stolen hammer by disguising the thunder god as a bride. His most devastating act was engineering the death of Baldr, the most beloved of the gods, by tricking the blind god Hodr into throwing a mistletoe dart — the only substance that could harm him.
Is Loki Evil?
Loki defies simple moral categories. In the early myths, he is a useful if unreliable ally who solves problems he often created himself. His transgressions escalate over time — from pranks to betrayals to the murder of Baldr, which triggers his imprisonment and eventual role in Ragnarok, where he leads the forces of chaos against the gods. Some scholars interpret him as a necessary agent of change in a mythological system that would otherwise be static. Others see him as the embodiment of disorder that must ultimately be contained.
What Happens to Loki at Ragnarok?
After killing Baldr, Loki is captured by the gods and bound beneath the earth with the entrails of his own son. A serpent is placed above him, dripping venom onto his face. His wife Sigyn holds a bowl to catch the venom, but each time she turns away to empty it, the venom falls on Loki and his writhing causes earthquakes. At Ragnarok, he breaks free and sails to the final battle on a ship made of dead men's fingernails. He and the god Heimdall kill each other in single combat as the world burns.
