Who Is Makima?

1 min read

Makima is a fictional character from the manga and anime series Chainsaw Man, created by Tatsuki Fujimoto. She is a high-ranking Public Safety Devil Hunter who recruits the protagonist Denji into her division. Makima presents herself as a caring, enigmatic leader who gives Denji the family and purpose he never had. However, she is one of the most complex and terrifying antagonists in modern manga, whose true nature and goals are gradually revealed to devastating effect. Makima is a masterclass in how a character can be simultaneously charismatic and deeply unsettling.

What Is Makima's True Identity?

Makima is the Control Devil, the devil born from humanity's fear of being controlled and dominated. She is one of the most powerful devils in existence, having lived through multiple incarnations. Her goal is to use Denji and the Chainsaw Devil's power to consume the devils she considers obstacles to creating her ideal world, one where she controls everything and eliminates suffering by eliminating freedom. Her seemingly kind treatment of Denji was always manipulation designed to put him in the emotional state she needed to control the Chainsaw Devil.

What Are Makima's Powers?

Makima's power of control allows her to dominate any being she considers beneath her. She can force people and devils to obey her commands, borrow the abilities of those she controls, and even use an attack that crushes targets from a vast distance. She has near-immortality because any damage inflicted on her is transferred to a random Japanese citizen through a contract with the Japanese Prime Minister. Her most terrifying ability is her manipulation of emotions and relationships, using genuine human desires for connection as weapons.

Why Is Makima Such an Effective Villain?

Makima works as a villain because the reader, like Denji, wants to believe she is good. She is charming, competent, and provides Denji with everything he has ever wanted. The gradual revelation of her true nature forces the audience to re-evaluate every seemingly kind action she took. Fujimoto crafted a character who embodies the seductive nature of control: the promise of order, safety, and love in exchange for freedom. Makima represents how the desire to be cared for can make people vulnerable to the worst forms of manipulation.
