Who Is Pip?
Pip, whose full name is Philip Pirrip, is the protagonist and narrator of Charles Dickens' 1861 novel Great Expectations. He is an orphan raised by his harsh sister and her gentle husband Joe Gargery, a blacksmith. When a mysterious benefactor provides him with wealth and the chance to become a gentleman, Pip moves to London and slowly loses himself to snobbery before learning what truly matters.
What Happens to Pip?
As a child, Pip helps an escaped convict in the marshes — an act of kindness that will echo through his life. He falls in love with the cold, beautiful Estella. He receives great expectations from an unknown benefactor and assumes it is the wealthy Miss Havisham. The truth that his benefactor is the convict Magwitch forces Pip to confront his own prejudices.
What Does Pip Learn?
Pip learns that gentility is a matter of character, not wealth. His rejection of Joe and his humble origins is the novel's central moral failure, and his eventual return to gratitude and humility is his redemption.
