Who Is Puck?
Puck, also known as Robin Goodfellow, is a character in William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream (c. 1595). He is a mischievous fairy spirit who serves Oberon, King of the Fairies. Puck is responsible for much of the play's comic chaos, applying a love potion to the wrong people's eyes and creating romantic confusion that takes an entire night to untangle.
What Does Puck Do?
Oberon orders Puck to use a magical flower to make Demetrius fall in love with Helena. Puck accidentally enchants Lysander instead, causing both men to pursue Helena while Hermia is abandoned. He also transforms Bottom's head into a donkey's head, which Titania, under the flower's influence, falls in love with.
Why Is Puck Important?
Puck is the embodiment of theatrical chaos — the force that makes comedy possible by making everything go wrong. He is also Shakespeare's most direct address to the audience, delivering the play's epilogue and asking for applause.
What Does Puck Represent?
Puck represents the unpredictability of love and the thin line between comedy and catastrophe. He shows that the things we take most seriously — love, desire, identity — can be upended by accident.
