Who Is San (Princess Mononoke)?
San, also known as Princess Mononoke, is the female lead of Hayao Miyazaki's 1997 film Princess Mononoke. She is a human girl raised by the wolf goddess Moro in the forests of Muromachi-era Japan. San fights alongside the forest gods against the humans of Iron Town who are destroying the ancient forest.
What Is San's Story?
San was abandoned by her human parents, who threw her to the wolves as a sacrifice. The wolf goddess Moro chose to raise her instead. San grew up among wolves, adopted their values, and declared war on the humans threatening her home. When the cursed warrior Ashitaka arrives, San is initially hostile. Their relationship becomes the bridge between the human and natural worlds.
Why Is San Important?
San represents the voice of the natural world in a film about nature versus civilization. She is not a gentle environmentalist — she is a warrior willing to kill to protect the forest. Miyazaki refused to soften her. She snarls, fights with her teeth, and genuinely hates people. This makes her argument more powerful because it comes without interest in human approval.
What Is San's Relationship with Ashitaka?
They do not end the film together conventionally. Ashitaka tells San he loves her. She responds that she likes him but cannot forgive humans. They agree to live apart but visit each other. Miyazaki has said this reflects his belief that humans and nature cannot be fully reconciled, only respected across a distance.
