Who Is Sesshomaru From InuYasha?
Sesshomaru is InuYasha's older half-brother and a major character in InuYasha by Rumiko Takahashi. He is a full-blooded dog demon (yokai) of immense power who initially despises humans and his half-demon brother. He is the eldest son of the great dog demon Inu no Taisho and wields Tenseiga, a sword that can resurrect the dead but cannot kill. Over the course of the series, his character develops through his relationship with Rin, a human orphan girl who follows him. He is one of the most popular characters in the franchise.
What Is Sesshomaru's Relationship With InuYasha?
Sesshomaru and InuYasha are half-brothers sharing the same father but different mothers. Sesshomaru resents InuYasha for being half-human and for inheriting their father's powerful sword Tessaiga. Their relationship begins as openly antagonistic, with Sesshomaru attempting to take Tessaiga by force. Over the series, their hostility gradually diminishes into grudging tolerance, though they never become warm.
Who Is Rin?
Rin is a human orphan girl who encounters Sesshomaru after he is injured. She attempts to care for him despite his coldness. After she is killed by wolves, Sesshomaru uses Tenseiga to resurrect her. She follows him thereafter, and her presence gradually humanizes him. Their relationship is parental or protective rather than romantic in the original InuYasha series. In the sequel Yashahime, it is revealed that Rin eventually becomes the mother of Sesshomaru's twin daughters.
What Are Sesshomaru's Powers?
Sesshomaru possesses superhuman strength, speed, and durability far exceeding most demons. He can fly, generate poison from his claws, transform into a massive dog demon, and wield various swords including Tenseiga (resurrection/healing), Bakusaiga (his own manifested blade, which prevents regeneration), and temporarily Tokijin. He lost his left arm in a battle with InuYasha early in the series; it regenerates later when he manifests Bakusaiga.
What Is Tenseiga?
Tenseiga is a sword forged from the fang of Inu no Taisho that can cut beings from the underworld and resurrect the recently dead. It cannot be used as a killing weapon against living beings. Sesshomaru's father deliberately bequeathed Tenseiga to Sesshomaru and Tessaiga (the killing sword) to InuYasha, recognizing that each son needed what the other sword taught: Sesshomaru needed compassion; InuYasha needed the will to protect.
