Who Is Superman?

1 min read

Superman (Kal-El / Clark Kent) is a DC Comics superhero and one of the most recognizable fictional characters in the world. Created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, he first appeared in Action Comics #1 (June 1938). He is an alien from the planet Krypton, sent to Earth as an infant and raised by the Kent family in Smallville, Kansas. Earth's yellow sun gives him powers including flight, super-strength, invulnerability, heat vision, freeze breath, and super-speed. He works as a journalist at the Daily Planet and protects Metropolis and the world. He is the archetype from which all subsequent superheroes derive.

What Are Superman's Powers?

Superman's powers come from Earth's yellow sun (Krypton orbited a red sun). They include: flight, super-strength (sufficient to move planets), invulnerability (bulletproof, can survive nuclear explosions), heat vision, freeze breath, X-ray vision, super-hearing, super-speed (approaching the speed of light), and the ability to survive in space. His only significant weakness is Kryptonite (radioactive remnants of Krypton) and magic.

What Is Superman's Origin Story?

Superman was born Kal-El on the dying planet Krypton. His father Jor-El placed him in a spacecraft and sent him to Earth before Krypton exploded. He was found and raised by Jonathan and Martha Kent in Smallville, Kansas, who named him Clark Kent. He discovered his powers during adolescence and moved to Metropolis as an adult, adopting the identity of Superman.

Why Is Superman Important?

Superman, introduced in 1938, was the first superhero in the modern sense — a costumed character with extraordinary powers who fights for justice. He established virtually every convention of the superhero genre: the secret identity, the costume, the arch-nemesis (Lex Luthor), the love interest (Lois Lane), and the moral code. Every superhero created since exists in Superman's shadow.

Who Has Played Superman?

Major portrayals include: Christopher Reeve (films, 1978-1987), Tom Welling (Smallville, TV, 2001-2011), Brandon Routh (Superman Returns, 2006), Henry Cavill (DCEU, 2013-2023), and David Corenswet (Superman, 2025). Christopher Reeve's portrayal is considered the definitive version.
