Who Is The Pythia?
The Pythia was the title given to the priestess who served as the Oracle at Delphi, the most important religious sanctuary in ancient Greece. For over a thousand years, from roughly the 8th century BCE to the 4th century CE, a succession of women sat on the sacred tripod in the Temple of Apollo and delivered prophecies that guided the decisions of kings, generals, and entire city-states.
How Did the Oracle Work?
The Pythia sat on a tripod over a chasm in the earth from which vapors rose (modern geologists have confirmed the presence of ethylene gas at the site). In a trance state, she would deliver utterances in response to questions posed by consultants. Her words were interpreted by priests and delivered in verse. The Oracle was consulted on matters ranging from military campaigns to colonial founding to personal decisions.
What Famous Prophecies Did the Pythia Deliver?
The Oracle told Croesus of Lydia that if he attacked Persia, a great empire would fall — it was his own. She told the Athenians to trust in wooden walls against the Persian invasion, which Themistocles interpreted as their navy. She declared Socrates the wisest man in Athens, which launched his philosophical quest to understand what that meant.
