Who Is The Voluspá Seeress?

1 min read

The Voluspá Seeress is the prophetic voice of the "Voluspa," the first and most important poem in the Poetic Edda, the primary source of Norse mythology. The poem presents a volva (seeress or prophetess) who describes the creation of the world, its present state, the twilight of the gods (Ragnarok), and the world that will rise afterward. She speaks with the authority of one who has witnessed everything.

What Does the Seeress Describe?

The seeress narrates the entire arc of Norse cosmology: the void before creation, the formation of the world from the body of the giant Ymir, the creation of humans, the golden age of the gods, the first murder, the binding of the wolf Fenrir, the death of Baldr, and the final battle of Ragnarok in which gods and giants destroy each other. After the destruction, she sees a new world rising from the waters.

Why Is the Voluspa Important?

The Voluspa is the single most important source for Norse mythology. Nearly everything we know about the Norse creation story, the world tree Yggdrasil, and Ragnarok comes from this poem. It has influenced everything from Wagner's operas to Tolkien's Lord of the Rings to modern Viking-themed media.
