Who Was Admiral Yi Sun-sin?
Admiral Yi Sun-sin was a Korean naval commander born in 1545 who is widely regarded as one of the greatest admirals in world history. During the Japanese invasions of Korea in the 1590s, he fought twenty-three naval engagements and never lost a single one. He accomplished this with inferior numbers, limited supplies, and a government that repeatedly tried to destroy him.
The Turtle Ships
Yi's most famous innovation was the geobukseon, or turtle ship — an armored warship with a covered deck that protected rowers from arrows and boarding attempts. The roof was studded with iron spikes to prevent enemies from climbing aboard, and the ship could fire cannons from multiple ports. Whether Yi invented the turtle ship or adapted an older design is debated, but his tactical use of it was devastating. Japanese naval forces, accustomed to boarding combat, had no answer for a ship they could not board.
The Battle of Myeongnyang
In 1597, Yi was stripped of his rank by political enemies, tortured, and demoted to common soldier. When the admiral who replaced him lost nearly the entire Korean fleet in a single battle, Yi was reinstated with only thirteen ships remaining. At the Battle of Myeongnyang, he positioned his thirteen ships in a narrow strait with fierce currents and defeated a Japanese fleet of over three hundred vessels. It is one of the most extraordinary naval victories in recorded history.
The Death at Noryang
Yi was killed in the final battle of the war in 1598 at Noryang. According to tradition, his last words were an order to keep his death secret so the fleet would continue fighting. His son and nephew kept his body upright in his armor, and the battle was won. He died as he had lived — thinking of the mission before himself.
