Who Was Black Elk?

1 min read

Black Elk (1863-1950) was an Oglala Lakota holy man, visionary, and spiritual leader. His account of his childhood visions and the destruction of Lakota civilization, recorded in Black Elk Speaks (1932), became one of the most important documents in Native American spiritual literature.

What Was Black Elk's Great Vision?

At age nine, Black Elk experienced an elaborate vision in which he was taken to the center of the world and shown the sacred hoop of his people, the six grandfathers representing the powers of the directions, and the fate of the Lakota nation. The vision gave him spiritual powers and responsibilities that shaped his entire life. He later performed the Horse Dance and other ceremonies to enact portions of his vision for his community.

What Did Black Elk Witness?

Black Elk lived through the most devastating period in Lakota history. He was present as a boy at the Battle of the Little Bighorn in 1876 and witnessed the Wounded Knee Massacre in 1890, where U.S. soldiers killed hundreds of Lakota men, women, and children. He also traveled to England with Buffalo Bill's Wild West show, where he met Queen Victoria.

What Is Black Elk Speaks?

In 1930, poet John G. Neihardt visited Black Elk on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. Black Elk shared his life story and visions, which Neihardt shaped into the book Black Elk Speaks (1932). Initially little-noticed, the book became enormously influential in the 1960s and 70s, inspiring both the Native American rights movement and broader interest in Indigenous spirituality.

What Is Black Elk's Legacy?

Black Elk preserved Lakota spiritual knowledge during a period when the U.S. government was actively suppressing Native religious practices. His vision of the sacred hoop and the interconnection of all life continues to inspire Indigenous and non-Indigenous readers alike.
