Who Was Che Guevara?

1 min read

Ernesto "Che" Guevara (1928-1967) was an Argentine Marxist revolutionary, physician, and guerrilla leader who played a central role in the Cuban Revolution alongside Fidel Castro. His image, taken from a 1960 photograph by Alberto Korda, became one of the most reproduced and recognized symbols of rebellion in the 20th century.

How Did Che Guevara Become a Revolutionary?

Born to a middle-class Argentine family, Guevara studied medicine and took a motorcycle journey across South America in 1952 that exposed him to widespread poverty and injustice. He became convinced that only armed revolution could address systemic inequality. He met Fidel Castro in Mexico in 1955 and joined the small band of fighters who invaded Cuba and eventually overthrew the Batista dictatorship in 1959.

What Was Guevara's Role in Cuba?

After the revolution succeeded, Guevara held several government positions including president of the National Bank and Minister of Industries. He oversaw agrarian reform, literacy campaigns, and the nationalization of industry. He also presided over tribunals that executed hundreds of Batista-era officials and opponents, one of the most controversial aspects of his legacy.

How Did Che Guevara Die?

Guevara left Cuba in 1965 to spread revolution, first in the Congo and then in Bolivia. His guerrilla campaign in Bolivia failed to gain peasant support. He was captured by Bolivian soldiers assisted by CIA operatives and executed on October 9, 1967, at age 39. His death cemented his status as a martyr figure.

Why Is Che Guevara's Image So Famous?

Alberto Korda's 1960 photograph, cropped to show only Guevara's face in his beret with its star, became the iconic image reproduced on countless posters, T-shirts, and murals worldwide. The image represents rebellion and idealism for some and violent authoritarianism for others.
