Who Was Dogen Zenji?
Dogen Zenji was a thirteenth-century Japanese Buddhist monk who founded the Soto school of Zen Buddhism in Japan. Born in Kyoto in 1200 to an aristocratic family, he became a monk as a child after his mother's death and spent years studying Buddhism before traveling to China, where he experienced a decisive awakening. His major work, the Shobogenzo (Treasury of the True Dharma Eye), is considered one of the most profound philosophical texts in all of East Asian Buddhism.
What Is Dogen Known For?
Dogen is best known for establishing shikantaza — the practice of "just sitting" — as the central method of Zen practice. Unlike the Rinzai school, which emphasizes koan study and sudden insight, Dogen taught that sitting meditation itself is enlightenment, not a means to achieve it. He articulated this through the concept of the unity of practice and realization: there is no gap between doing zazen and being awakened. This simple but revolutionary idea reshaped Japanese Buddhism.
What Is the Shobogenzo?
The Shobogenzo is a collection of essays written in Japanese rather than the scholarly Chinese that was standard for Buddhist texts in Japan at the time. This was itself a radical choice. The work addresses topics ranging from the nature of time and being to the proper way to wash your face. Dogen's writing is dense, poetic, and deliberately paradoxical — he often inverts conventional logic to push readers beyond conceptual thinking. The essay Uji (Being-Time) alone has generated centuries of philosophical commentary.
What Did Dogen Say About Time?
In Uji, Dogen argued that time and being are identical — every moment of existence is a complete expression of all time, and all time is present in every moment. This is not an abstract metaphysical claim but a practical teaching: if you are fully present in this moment of sitting, you are fully present in all of reality. There is nowhere else to go and nothing else to become.
