Who Was G.I. Gurdjieff?
George Ivanovich Gurdjieff (c. 1866-1949) was a Greek-Armenian mystic, philosopher, and spiritual teacher who developed a system called the Fourth Way — a path of spiritual development that could be practiced in ordinary life rather than in monasteries, ashrams, or caves. He traveled extensively across Central Asia and the Middle East, founded the Institute for the Harmonious Development of Man in France, and taught that most people live in a state of waking sleep — automatons who believe they are conscious but are not.
What Is the Fourth Way?
The Fourth Way is Gurdjieff's system of spiritual development. The first three ways are: the Way of the Fakir (mastery through physical suffering), the Way of the Monk (mastery through devotion), and the Way of the Yogi (mastery through knowledge). Each requires withdrawal from ordinary life. The Fourth Way combines elements of all three and can be practiced while living and working in the world. Its central teaching is self-remembering — the practice of maintaining conscious awareness of oneself throughout daily activities.
What Did Gurdjieff Mean by Waking Sleep?
Gurdjieff taught that human beings normally operate on autopilot — reacting mechanically to stimuli, following habits, and identifying with thoughts and emotions without genuine conscious awareness. He called this state waking sleep and said that the first step in spiritual development was recognizing that you are not actually awake. This concept anticipates aspects of modern mindfulness practice by decades.
What Is Self-Remembering?
Self-remembering is Gurdjieff's core practice: simultaneously being aware of your external environment and your internal state. Most people are aware of one or the other, never both. Self-remembering creates a divided attention that Gurdjieff considered the beginning of genuine consciousness.
