Who Was Hatshepsut?

1 min read

Hatshepsut (c. 1507-1458 BCE) was the fifth pharaoh of the Eighteenth Dynasty of Egypt and one of the few women to rule Egypt as pharaoh. She reigned for approximately 22 years, making her one of the longest-reigning female rulers in the ancient world. Her reign was marked by ambitious building projects, expanded trade networks, and a period of peace and prosperity. She is considered one of the most successful pharaohs in Egyptian history.

What Is Hatshepsut Known For?

Hatshepsut is best known for her mortuary temple at Deir el-Bahri, one of the most magnificent architectural achievements in ancient Egypt. She launched a major trading expedition to the land of Punt (likely modern Eritrea or Somalia), depicted in detailed reliefs at her temple. She commissioned hundreds of construction projects and produced some of the finest examples of Egyptian art and architecture. She also adopted male royal regalia, including the false beard and kilt, and was often depicted as a male pharaoh in official art.

How Did Hatshepsut Become Pharaoh?

Hatshepsut was the daughter of Pharaoh Thutmose I and became the principal wife of Thutmose II. When Thutmose II died, his son by a secondary wife (Thutmose III) was too young to rule, so Hatshepsut initially served as regent. Within a few years, she assumed the full title and powers of pharaoh. She legitimized her rule through religious narratives claiming divine birth from the god Amun and by positioning herself within the established male pharaonic tradition.

What Happened to Hatshepsut's Legacy?

After Hatshepsut's death, Thutmose III (or his son) ordered many of her images and inscriptions erased or destroyed — an act of damnatio memoriae that long obscured her historical importance. Scholars initially struggled to understand references to a "female king." Modern archaeology has restored Hatshepsut to her rightful place as one of Egypt's great rulers. Her mummy was identified in 2007, and her story has become a powerful symbol of women's leadership in the ancient world.
