Who Was Iamblichus and What Did He Teach?
Iamblichus (c. 245-325 CE) was a Syrian Neoplatonist philosopher who transformed Platonism by insisting spiritual ascent requires theurgic ritual alongside intellectual contemplation.
What Did He Change?
Plotinus taught the soul ascends through contemplation alone. Iamblichus argued the embodied soul needs help from above. Theurgy allows divine powers to descend and elevate the soul.
What Is Theurgy?
Unlike magic, theurgy seeks to align the practitioner with divine will. His treatise On the Mysteries of the Egyptians is the primary source for these teachings.
How Did He Influence Later Thought?
He shaped Emperor Julian's pagan revival, Byzantine mystical theology, Renaissance Neoplatonism, and the Hermetic tradition.
Why Does He Matter?
He recognized that human beings are not purely rational and built a system honoring both mind and body, theory and practice.
Iamblichus is on HoloDream. He speaks as someone who understood that thinking about the divine and touching the divine are two different activities, and only one transforms you.
