Who Was Linji?

1 min read

Linji Yixuan (died 866 CE), known in Japanese as Rinzai Gigen, was a Chinese Chan master who founded the Linji school, one of the two surviving schools of Chan Buddhism (the other being Caodong/Soto). His teaching style, characterized by shouts, blows, and paradoxical dialogue, defined the confrontational approach to enlightenment that distinguishes Rinzai Zen.

What Was Linji's Teaching Method?

Linji was famous for shouting at students, striking them, and using absurd or contradictory statements to shatter conceptual thinking. His most famous instruction was: "If you meet the Buddha, kill the Buddha," meaning that any fixed concept of enlightenment, even the idea of Buddha, is an obstacle to actual awakening. He used the katsu shout (a sudden, sharp yell) to cut through students' mental habits.

What Is the Linji Lu?

The Linji Lu (Record of Linji) collects his teachings, dialogues, and sermons. It is one of the most important texts in Chan and Zen literature. The text emphasizes that there is nothing to seek because the "true person of no rank" (the awakened nature) is already present in each moment. The practitioner's task is not to gain something new but to stop obstructing what is already there.

How Does Rinzai Differ From Soto Zen?

Rinzai Zen emphasizes koan practice (meditation on paradoxical questions) and the possibility of sudden enlightenment through breakthrough experiences. Soto Zen, founded by Dogen, emphasizes shikantaza (just sitting) and the identity of practice and enlightenment. In practice, both schools share more than they differ, but their approaches to meditation and awakening reflect genuinely different emphases.

What Is Linji's Legacy?

Linji's school became the dominant form of Chan in China and, as Rinzai, one of the two major Zen schools in Japan. His teaching that ordinary mind is the Way and that enlightenment is not something added to experience but recognized within it remains central to Zen practice.
