Who Was Phryne?

1 min read

Phryne was an ancient Greek hetaira — a high-status courtesan and companion — who lived in Athens in the fourth century BCE and became one of the wealthiest and most famous women in the Greek world. She modeled for the sculptor Praxiteles and the painter Apelles, and her beauty became so associated with the goddess Aphrodite that she was put on trial for impiety. The trial produced one of the most dramatic courtroom moments in history.

The Courtesan's Power

In ancient Athens, citizen women lived restricted lives, confined largely to the household. Hetairai like Phryne occupied a different social position entirely — they were educated, independent, wealthy, and moved freely through the male world of symposia, art, and philosophy. Phryne accumulated a fortune so vast that she reportedly offered to rebuild the walls of Thebes after Alexander the Great destroyed the city, on the condition that an inscription read: destroyed by Alexander, rebuilt by Phryne.

The Model for Aphrodite

Phryne served as the model for Praxiteles' Aphrodite of Knidos, the first monumental nude female sculpture in Greek art and one of the most influential artworks in Western history. She also modeled for Apelles' painting of Aphrodite Anadyomene, depicting the goddess rising from the sea. Her body became, through art, the standard by which divine beauty was measured for centuries.

The Trial

Phryne was charged with impiety — a serious offense that could carry the death penalty. The details of the charge are unclear, but it likely involved her association with divine imagery. Her defender, the orator Hypereides, reportedly removed her robe before the jury, arguing that such beauty could not be an offense to the gods but was itself evidence of divine favor. She was acquitted. The story may be embellished, but it has endured because it captures something true about the relationship between beauty, power, and danger.
