Who Was Queen Hatshepsut?

1 min read

Hatshepsut was the fifth pharaoh of the Eighteenth Dynasty of ancient Egypt, one of the most successful rulers in Egyptian history, and one of the few women to hold the title of pharaoh. She reigned for approximately 21 years, from around 1479 to 1458 BCE, presiding over a period of peace, prosperity, and monumental building.

How Did Hatshepsut Become Pharaoh?

Hatshepsut was the daughter of Thutmose I and the royal wife of Thutmose II. When Thutmose II died, his son Thutmose III (by a secondary wife) was too young to rule, so Hatshepsut served as regent. Within a few years, she took the unprecedented step of declaring herself pharaoh, adopting the full royal titulary and even wearing the traditional false beard of kingship. She justified her claim through an elaborate narrative of divine birth, claiming that the god Amun had fathered her.

What Did Hatshepsut Accomplish?

Hatshepsut's reign was marked by ambitious building projects, including her magnificent mortuary temple at Deir el-Bahari, one of the architectural masterpieces of ancient Egypt. She reestablished trade networks disrupted during the Hyksos occupation, most notably sending a major trading expedition to the Land of Punt. She also commissioned the construction of massive obelisks at the temple of Karnak.

Why Were Her Monuments Defaced?

After Hatshepsut's death, many of her monuments were defaced and her name was chiseled from inscriptions. This was long attributed to Thutmose III's personal hatred, but modern scholars believe the erasure may have occurred later in his reign as part of a political effort to normalize the succession line and prevent future women from claiming the throne.
