Who Was Saint Francis of Assisi?

1 min read

Saint Francis of Assisi (1181-1226) was an Italian friar, mystic, and founder of the Franciscan Order. Born to a wealthy merchant family in Assisi, he renounced his inheritance after a spiritual crisis, embraced radical poverty, and spent his life preaching, serving lepers, and living in harmony with animals and nature. He is one of the most venerated figures in Christian history and the patron saint of animals and the environment.

What Did Saint Francis Give Up?

Francis was the son of Pietro di Bernardone, a prosperous cloth merchant. As a young man he fought in the war between Assisi and Perugia, was captured, and fell seriously ill during imprisonment. After his release, he experienced a series of visions that led him to strip off his fine clothing in the public square, return everything to his father, and declare that God alone was his father. He lived in absolute poverty from that point forward, begging for food and repairing crumbling churches with his own hands.

Why Did He Talk to Animals?

Francis saw all living creatures as brothers and sisters under one Creator. He preached sermons to birds, negotiated a peace treaty with a wolf terrorizing the town of Gubbio, and referred to the sun, moon, and wind as siblings. His Canticle of the Sun, composed near the end of his life, is considered one of the earliest works of Italian literature and treats all of nature as a single family worthy of praise and reverence.

What Are the Stigmata?

In 1224, while praying on Mount La Verna, Francis reportedly received the stigmata -- wounds on his hands, feet, and side corresponding to the crucifixion wounds of Christ. He is the first person in recorded Christian history to have received them. He bore these wounds for the remaining two years of his life and tried to keep them hidden from others.

What Is His Legacy?

The Franciscan Order he founded grew rapidly during his lifetime and remains one of the largest religious orders in the world. His emphasis on simplicity, humility, and care for creation has influenced movements from liberation theology to modern environmentalism. Pope Francis chose his papal name in honor of the saint from Assisi.
