Saladin, born Salah ad-Din Yusuf ibn Ayyub around 1137, was the first sultan of Egypt and Syria and founder of the Ayyubid dynasty. He is best remembered for recapturing Jerusalem from the Crusaders in 1187 and for the chivalric respect he earned from both Muslim and Christian contemporaries.

After defeating the Crusader army at the Battle of Hattin in July 1187, Saladin's forces swept through the Crusader states. Jerusalem surrendered in October 1187. Unlike the Crusaders who had massacred the city's inhabitants in 1099, Saladin allowed the Christian population to leave peacefully, and many who could not pay their ransom were freed without charge.
