Who Was Susanoo?

1 min read

Susanoo is the storm god of Japanese mythology — wild, emotional, destructive, and ultimately heroic. Born from the god Izanagi alongside his siblings Amaterasu (the sun goddess) and Tsukuyomi (the moon god), Susanoo was assigned to rule the sea but threw such a violent tantrum that he was banished from heaven. What he did after being cast out is one of the great redemption stories in world mythology.

The Tantrum That Shook Heaven

When Izanagi divided the realms among his children, Susanoo wept and raged instead of accepting his domain. His crying caused forests to wither and oceans to dry up. He demanded to visit his dead mother in the underworld, and when his father banished him, he went to his sister Amaterasu's realm instead. There, he destroyed her rice paddies, threw a flayed horse into her weaving hall, and caused such chaos that Amaterasu hid in a cave, plunging the world into darkness.

The Eight-Headed Serpent

Banished to earth, Susanoo encountered an elderly couple weeping because they had to sacrifice their last daughter to Yamata no Orochi, a monstrous eight-headed serpent. Susanoo devised a plan: he set out eight vats of sake, and when the serpent drank from all of them and fell asleep, he cut it to pieces. Inside the serpent's tail, he found the legendary sword Kusanagi no Tsurugi, one of the three Imperial Regalia of Japan.

Destruction and Redemption

Susanoo's story is about what happens when raw emotional power finds a purpose. In heaven, his energy was purely destructive because it had no direction. On earth, he channeled the same ferocity into protecting the innocent and slaying monsters. He is not a refined deity. He is the storm itself — terrifying when purposeless, magnificent when aimed.
