Who Was Tamamo-no-Mae?
Tamamo-no-Mae is one of the most famous figures in Japanese mythology — a nine-tailed fox spirit, or kitsune, who disguised herself as the most beautiful and intelligent woman in Japan, entered the imperial court, and nearly destroyed the emperor before being exposed and hunted to the edges of the earth. Her story is about the danger of beauty that conceals predatory intelligence, and also about what happens to powerful women who are discovered.
The Most Beautiful Woman in Japan
According to legend, Tamamo-no-Mae appeared at the court of Emperor Toba in the twelfth century as a young woman of extraordinary beauty and learning. She could answer any question, recite any poem, and outshine every scholar at court. The emperor fell deeply in love with her. But soon after she arrived, he began to sicken, growing weaker and more confused as her influence grew.
The Unmasking
The court astrologer Abe no Yasunari performed a divination and discovered that Tamamo-no-Mae was not human but a nine-tailed fox spirit whose true nature was killing the emperor. When exposed, she fled the court and transformed into her fox form. The emperor sent his two greatest warriors to hunt her. According to one version, she appeared to one of them in a dream and begged for mercy. He killed her anyway.
The Killing Stone
After her death, Tamamo-no-Mae's spirit entered a massive stone called the Sessho-seki, the Killing Stone, which emitted poisonous gases that killed anyone who approached. The stone sat in the volcanic fields of Nasu for centuries. In 2022, the real Sessho-seki boulder split in half, and social media declared that the fox spirit had been released. The joke only works because the story still lives.
