Who Was Theodora?
Theodora was the Empress of the Byzantine Empire from 527 to 548 CE, wife and co-ruler of Emperor Justinian I. Rising from poverty and a career as an actress — a scandalous background in Byzantine society — she became one of the most powerful women in history, shaping law, policy, and the course of an empire.
How Did Theodora Rise to Power?
According to the historian Procopius, Theodora was born around 500 CE to a family associated with the Hippodrome in Constantinople. She worked as an actress and courtesan before converting to Miaphysite Christianity and catching the attention of Justinian, then heir to the throne. Justinian was so taken with her that he changed the law prohibiting senators from marrying actresses. They married around 525 CE, and when Justinian became emperor in 527, Theodora was crowned Augusta.
What Did Theodora Do During the Nika Riots?
In 532 CE, the Nika Riots nearly toppled Justinian's government. Rioters set fire to much of Constantinople and proclaimed a rival emperor. Justinian's advisors urged him to flee. Theodora reportedly refused, declaring that she would rather die in imperial purple than live as a fugitive. Her resolve stiffened Justinian's spine, and the rebellion was crushed. This moment cemented her reputation as the true power behind the throne.
What Was Theodora's Impact on Law and Policy?
Theodora championed laws protecting women from trafficking and forced prostitution. She established homes for former prostitutes, expanded divorce rights for women, and pushed for legislation that gave mothers greater guardianship rights over their children. She also wielded enormous influence in religious policy, protecting Miaphysite Christians from persecution.
