Who Was Tomyris?

1 min read

Tomyris was a queen of the Massagetae, a nomadic people of Central Asia, who is best known for defeating and killing Cyrus the Great of Persia around 530 BCE. Her victory over the founder of the Achaemenid Empire is one of the most dramatic episodes recorded by the ancient Greek historian Herodotus.

How Did Tomyris Defeat Cyrus the Great?

According to Herodotus, Cyrus invaded Massagetae territory east of the Caspian Sea after Tomyris rejected his marriage proposal, which she recognized as an attempt to annex her kingdom. Cyrus initially used a trick, leaving a camp full of wine for the Massagetae to find. When Tomyris's son Spargapises and his soldiers drank the wine and fell into a stupor, the Persians captured them. Spargapises killed himself in captivity. Enraged, Tomyris gathered her forces and crushed the Persian army in a brutal battle in which Cyrus himself was killed.

What Did Tomyris Do With Cyrus's Body?

Herodotus reports that after the battle, Tomyris found Cyrus's body on the field. She filled a skin bag with human blood and plunged his severed head into it, declaring that she was giving him his fill of blood, since his thirst for it had been insatiable in life. This act has made her a symbol of righteous vengeance throughout history.

Why Is Tomyris Historically Significant?

Tomyris is one of the few women in the ancient world recorded as defeating one of history's greatest conquerors. Cyrus the Great had built an empire stretching from the Mediterranean to Central Asia, and his death at the hands of Tomyris marked the eastern limit of Persian expansion. Her story has been depicted by Renaissance painters, referenced by medieval chroniclers, and held up as an example of courage and leadership.
