Who Was Tomyris?
Tomyris (also spelled Tomiris, active c. 530 BCE) was a queen of the Massagetae, a nomadic people who lived in the steppes east of the Caspian Sea in what is now Central Asia. She is most famous for defeating and killing Cyrus the Great of Persia, the founder of the Achaemenid Empire, in 530 BCE — one of the most dramatic events in ancient military history. Her story is primarily known through the writings of the Greek historian Herodotus.
What Is Tomyris Known For?
Tomyris is known for her decisive victory over Cyrus the Great, who had conquered much of the known world and sought to add the Massagetae lands to his empire. According to Herodotus, after Cyrus captured her son Spargapises through a trick involving wine (the Massagetae were unfamiliar with it), her son killed himself in shame. Tomyris then led her army against the Persian forces and won what Herodotus described as the fiercest battle between non-Greek peoples. Cyrus was killed in the fighting.
What Did Tomyris Do After the Battle?
According to Herodotus, after the battle Tomyris searched the battlefield for Cyrus's body, found it, and plunged his severed head into a wineskin filled with blood. She reportedly said words to the effect of: "I warned you that I would quench your thirst for blood." This act was both vengeance for her son and a symbolic statement about the insatiable greed of conquerors. The scene has been depicted in numerous paintings, including works by Peter Paul Rubens and Mattia Preti.
Why Is Tomyris Historically Significant?
Tomyris is one of the few ancient leaders who defeated the seemingly invincible Persian Empire at the height of its power. Her victory ended the life of one of history's greatest conquerors and halted Persian expansion into Central Asia. She is celebrated as a national heroine in Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, and other Central Asian nations. She represents both the military prowess of the steppe peoples and the principle that no empire is too great to fall.
