Who Was Zarathustra?

1 min read

Zarathustra, also known as Zoroaster, was an ancient Persian prophet who founded one of the world's oldest monotheistic religions and introduced concepts that would shape Judaism, Christianity, Islam, and Western philosophy for millennia. He lived sometime between 1500 and 500 BCE — scholars disagree on the date — and his teachings about the cosmic struggle between good and evil, free will, and individual moral responsibility became foundational to how billions of people understand the world.

The Revelation

According to Zoroastrian tradition, Zarathustra received his revelation at the age of thirty while drawing water from a river. The angel Vohu Manah appeared to him and led him into the presence of Ahura Mazda, the supreme god of wisdom and truth. Zarathustra was told that the universe is a battleground between Ahura Mazda and Angra Mainyu, the spirit of destruction and lies, and that every human being must choose which side to serve.

The Ideas That Changed Everything

Before Zarathustra, most religions did not frame the world as a moral contest between good and evil. His theology introduced concepts that would become so universal they now seem obvious: heaven and hell, a final judgment, the resurrection of the dead, and the idea that individual humans have the free will and moral responsibility to choose righteousness. These ideas entered Judaism during the Babylonian exile and from there spread into Christianity and Islam.

The Living Religion

Zoroastrianism is still practiced today, primarily by Parsi communities in India and Zoroastrians in Iran. The religion emphasizes good thoughts, good words, and good deeds — a moral framework of elegant simplicity. Fire temples maintain eternal flames as symbols of truth and divine light. Zarathustra's religion has fewer followers today than it once did, but its ideas are embedded in the moral DNA of most of the world.
