Who Was Zheng He?

1 min read

Zheng He was a Chinese admiral, explorer, and diplomat who commanded seven massive naval expeditions across the Indian Ocean between 1405 and 1433 during the Ming dynasty. Born in 1371 in Yunnan province to a Muslim Hui family, he led the largest fleet the world had ever seen, visiting over 30 countries across Southeast Asia, India, the Persian Gulf, and East Africa.

How Big Was Zheng He's Fleet?

Zheng He's fleet was staggering in scale. His first voyage in 1405 comprised approximately 317 ships and 27,800 men. The largest vessels, called treasure ships, were reportedly up to 400 feet long and 160 feet wide, dwarfing the ships European explorers would use decades later. Columbus's Santa Maria, by comparison, was roughly 60 feet long. The fleet included supply ships, horse transports, troop carriers, and water tankers.

What Was the Purpose of the Voyages?

The expeditions served multiple purposes. They projected Ming dynasty power and prestige across the known world, established diplomatic relations and trade networks, and collected tribute from foreign rulers. Zheng He distributed gifts of silk, porcelain, and gold while receiving exotic goods and animals, including giraffes from East Africa. The voyages were diplomatic missions backed by overwhelming naval force.

Why Did the Voyages Stop?

After Zheng He's death around 1433, the Ming court's Confucian bureaucrats, who had long opposed the expensive expeditions, gained the upper hand. They argued that the voyages drained the treasury and that China should focus inward. The fleet was dismantled, records were destroyed, and China withdrew from maritime exploration. This decision is one of history's great what-ifs, as China had the technology and capability to have reached the Americas before Europe.
