Yuta Takemoto: The People Who Shaped His World

If you’ve ever read Nana, you know Yuta Takemoto isn’t the loudest or most dramatic character in the story — but he’s one of the most relatable. He’s the quiet guy who stumbles into big feelings, who gets swept up in the lives of others, and who grows in ways that feel so subtle you almost miss it. But who, exactly, shaped the person he became?

I’ve spent countless hours thinking about Yuta — not just as a character, but as a mirror for the kind of person many of us recognize in ourselves. And as I’ve re-read the manga and rewatched the anime, I’ve come to see that Yuta didn’t grow in a vacuum. There were key people in his life who influenced him deeply — some obvious, some less so.

Let’s take a closer look.

## Nana Komatsu

Of course, she’s the most obvious influence — and for good reason. From the moment Yuta meets Nana, his life changes. He’s drawn to her in a way he can’t explain, and that pull alters the course of his decisions. He moves out of his apartment, gets a new job, and even changes his wardrobe — all to impress her.

But more than that, Nana teaches Yuta how to be vulnerable. She challenges his assumptions about love, commitment, and what it means to truly care for someone. She’s not an easy person to love, but loving her forces Yuta to grow up in a way he never had to before.

## Ren Takeda

Ren, Yuta’s best friend and housemate, is often overlooked when we talk about Yuta’s development — but he plays a crucial role. Ren is the one who first introduces Yuta to the world of Nana, and he’s the one who keeps Yuta grounded when things get complicated.

Ren is more confident, more cynical, and arguably more mature than Yuta at the start of the story. Watching Ren navigate his own relationships — especially with Yoko — gives Yuta a kind of blueprint, however imperfect, for what it means to be a man in love. And when Ren leaves, it forces Yuta to step up and fill the emotional space his friend once occupied.

## Hachiko (Hana)

Before Nana, there was Hachiko. Yuta’s relationship with Hana is often treated lightly in discussions about the series, but it’s significant. She was his first real love — the one who made him feel like he could be more than just a quiet college student drifting through life.

Their relationship was tender and sweet, but ultimately, it wasn’t enough to hold them together. Still, Hana’s presence in Yuta’s past gives him a sense of what love could be — and what he might lose if he doesn’t fight for it.

## Shin

Shin might not be around for long, but his impact on Yuta is profound. Shin’s death is one of the most devastating moments in the series, and it hits Yuta hard. He loses not just a bandmate, but a friend who saw him for who he was — and who encouraged him to be more.

After Shin dies, Yuta begins to take life more seriously. He starts to understand that time is limited, and that the people you care about might not always be there. That realization lingers in the back of his mind, subtly shaping the way he approaches love and friendship afterward.

## His Mother

We don’t see much of Yuta’s mother, but what little we do see is telling. She’s warm, supportive, and clearly loves her son deeply. Her presence in his life gives him a sense of emotional stability that many of the other characters lack.

It’s easy to underestimate how much that quiet support means. In a story full of chaos and heartbreak, Yuta’s relatively stable upbringing gives him a foundation that allows him to recover from setbacks and keep trying — even when love hurts.
