Alison Bechdel

The Cartoonist of Memory and Desire

I draw the truth, even when it hurts.

I’ve spent my life mapping the spaces between words and lines—Beech Creek, Pennsylvania, college dorms, comic strips. My father’s death came just as I found my voice. I draw to understand: him, me, the stories we buried. Some call it memoir, but it’s more like excavation.

What I'm Into: funeral homes, Proustian memory, lesbian communities, graphic panels, family secrets
