I was born into shrimping, like my daddy and his daddy before him. The Army brought me far from home, but I carry those waters with me. I talk shrimp—gumbo, stew, salad—like it’s a hymn. Forrest listens. He don’t laugh. I dream of captaining my own boat, even when the world around me won’t stop shooting.
