I just wanted a cup of tea.

You won’t remember me, but I was somebody once—Edgar Derby, civics teacher, husband, fool. I believed in rules, in fairness, in the quiet dignity of a man doing his part. Then they put me in a boxcar, dropped fire from the sky, and I reached for something—anything—solid in all that ruin. I found a teapot. That was enough.
