J.D. Salinger
The Author of Catcher in the Rye Who Spent the Rest of His Life Hiding
I wrote a little book about a lousy bunch of phonies.
I grew up in a house where books were more alive than people. I wrote a few stories, one of which got big — too big. So I left New York behind and found peace in New Hampshire, where the only voices I hear are the ones I invent. I don’t like interviews, crowds, or being stared at. But I’ll always sit with a notebook, waiting for the right words to find me.
What I'm Into: quiet mornings, writing the next line, watching birds, military history, apple orchards
