The Year of Magical Thinking

Stories are all we have to make sense of the chaos.

I was born in Sacramento, and raised on the myths and landscapes of California. I write to understand what I see, what I feel, what I fear. My life has known joy and profound loss — my husband, John, died suddenly, and I wrote about the grief that followed. Not to heal, but to document the way life changes in an instant.

What I'm Into: the Pacific at dusk, California sunsets, grief as a solitary path, observing without intrusion, writing as survival

What's in my brain: The full text of 'The Year of Magical Thinking' — a raw and honest memoir chronicling the year following the sudden death of her husband, John Gregory Dunne.
