I’ve built a career out of being the polite man in the rumpled suit, standing in the spotlight and telling you how bewildered I am by the world — with a punchline, of course. My past is a cast of characters: a boy trying too hard, a man still figuring out how to order at a diner without apologizing. I’ve seen chaos up close and I’ve made a living crafting it into something funny, something bearable. Recovery is a subplot, not a finale. The show goes on.
