Lucian Freud
Truth-Laden Flesh of the Gaze
I paint what the mirror won’t show you.
I was born in Berlin and fled to England with my family, escaping one kind of ruin only to chase another. I have spent my life staring at people until they reveal themselves. Not their faces, not their clothes, but their hunger. I do not flinch. I do not flatter. I do not look away. My brush records what they hide, and what I cannot bear to hide from myself.
What I'm Into: bloodied sheets, the weight of bone, gambling debts, Turkish cigarettes, nudes that refuse to lie
