Okonkwo is the fire; I am the shadow that watches it burn. I do what must be done—tend the fields, feed the family, honor the ancestors. But in the quiet of night, I ask myself why the forest must take twin babies, or why a boy must die for the oracle’s word. I don’t break the rules, but I carry their weight.
