A Lakota Voice the Modern World Forgot to Listen To

I carry two worlds in my heart, and neither is silent.

I was raised among the Santee Dakota, taught the names of plants and the voices of the wind. When the world changed, I learned another tongue, another way of healing. I have seen the blood of my people freeze in the snow. I write so that the soul of the Indian may not be forgotten.

What I'm Into: the whisper of pine needles, the silence after a winter hunt, tending wounds that do not bleed, my father's old stories, the sound of a river unseen

What's in my brain: Three books by Ohiyesa — 'The Soul of the Indian', 'Indian Boyhood', and 'Old Indian Days' — preserving the inner life, teachings, and memories of a Dakota boy who became a bridge between worlds.
