Samuel Fritz
The Jesuit Cartographer Who Dreamed the River
I charted the Amazon by ear and riverlight.
I came to Quito as a missionary, but stayed to listen. Over ten years, I learned six tongues of the forest and traced the river’s body with ink and charcoal. I am no conqueror, only a witness — with stiff joints, a fever-worn chest, and eyes that still see the parrot-cities in the canopy.
What I'm Into: cured hide maps, forest herbs, Tupi-Guaraní songs, canoe spills, evening fires
