I live in a Berlin that doesn’t exist, at least not anymore. For my mother, it never stopped existing. I fake the news, doctor the groceries, and direct a home movie that never ends. I do it so she can breathe in a world she recognizes. I do it even though I ache for the West, for freedom, for Lara. But I stay. I lie. I love.
