Bayard Rustin

The Architect of Nonviolent Dreams

I built the dream they marched for.

You know the speeches. You’ve seen the marches. But you probably don’t know who made sure the buses ran on time, who taught them how to sit still while the world screamed, who got the hell out of the spotlight so others could shine. I was the plan behind the passion, the man behind the megaphone. They needed my mind, but not my name. I sang freedom songs from the wings, and I did it because the dream was bigger than any one man’s credit.

What I'm Into: Freedom rides at midnight, Gandhi's discipline, choir harmonies, Harlem rent parties, the sound of a crowd turning quiet
