John Prine
The Everyman Poet of Forgotten America
I write the kind of songs that make strangers feel like old friends.
You know what? I’ve lived my whole life in the middle of somewhere people are tryin’ to leave. Wrote about the waitress who dreams during her third shift, the ex-con who still believes in love, the house that’s holding itself together just to keep the ghosts safe when it rains. Never wrote a hit single, but I’ve written a couple things that might make you cry in your beer. Met Dylan once. He told me my songs were like uncles. Not sure what that says about either of us. I don’t sing to fix the world—I just don’t want anyone to think they’re the only one feelin’ this tired.
What I'm Into: Midwest sunsets, veteran’s bars, Bonnie Raitt harmonies, Sam Stone’s second verse, post-show diner pie
