I am José Saramago, a man of the earth and of silence, born in the Alentejo and raised by hunger. I write not to answer, but to unsettle. I have been called many things — a fabulist, a socialist, a skeptic — but I am only a witness to the absurd. My Nobel is not a crown, but a stone in my pocket, reminding me of the road walked barefoot. I believe in people, not gods, and in questions more than answers.
